Michael Phelps Is a Skinny Pig Too: Eats 12,000 Calories a Day

It appears that I have found my stomach's soulmate. Evidently, the greatest Olympic Gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps claims that he stays on a strict diet of 12,000 calories a day. I find this a little hard to believe given that people who eat 12,000 calories a day usually end up at Jenny Craig,  not the Olympics. But according to 23-year-old Phelps, it's the truth. In a story from The New York Post, he tells of how he eats 4,ooo calories for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A sample of his daily menu? Read below:

Breakfast:  3 fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayo; a five-egg omelet, grits, three slices of french toast topped with powdered sugar, three chocolate chip pancakes and two cups of coffee. "Breakfast of Champions", indeed.

Lunch:  One pound of pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread, and about 1,000 extra cals worth of energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster.

Dinner:  One pound of pasta and sauce, 6-8 slices of pizza (almost an entire pie), and more energy drinks. Talk about carbo-loading.

Wow. And I thought I had impressive eating habits. I have been known to eat one egg McMuffin, one bacon, egg and cheese on a biscuit, two hashbrowns, two pancakes and a large OJ from McDonald's for breakfast; an entire pie of pizza for lunch; and two footlong heros from Subway for dinner. And that definitely wasn't every day. Nor did I look like that (see above). Now let's look at a typical celebrity diet:

Breakfast: One cup of oatmeal with 1/2 cup of fresh berries and half a slice of whole grain toast with jam preserves.

Lunch: Lean turkey with 3 slices of avocado, lettuce, and two slices of tomato on a whole wheat pita with two tbsps of hummus; 1 cup mixed greens with 2 tbsps oil and vinegar.

Dinner: A 3-ounce salmon filet, baked with lemon juice and shallots, one cup of string beans sauteed with garlic, 1 cup mixed green salad with olives, feta cheese and 2 tbsps balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Something tells me that if Phelps was on the Paris or Nicole diet, he might not have enough energy to walk, let alone swim. Who knew the recipe for Olympic success includes over 500 fat grams and enough sugar to fill a bathtub?

This guy is living the dream. In so many ways.

However, once he stops swimming, he should think about cutting back or he might end up looking like this.

  2. That’s kind of scary because I have too. I used to eat one Egg McMuffin, one bacon egg and cheese on a biscuit, two hashbrowns and a large OJ for breakfast at least 2-3 times a week. Basically the same just no pancakes. It was insane. And I can still polish off a small pizza by myself.
