International Pickle Day is Back This Sunday!

Pickle day

Last weekend was the Vendy's, next weekend is the NYC Food & Wine Festival, and this weekend has two things going on: The New York Culinary Experience (sold out) and International Pickle Day. My calendar is busier than the Village on Halloween. Ok maybe not THAT busy.

The LES BID ( Lower East Side Business Improvement District) and the NY Food Museum bring you International Pickle Day this Sunday, Oct. 4th. I think it sounds like fun if you love pickles (as I do) and like samples (who doesn't?). I never knew that pickles could be "international." I thought you just take a cucumber, soak it in brine and there you go: pickle. But no, here there will be pickles from all over the world, including beets, cabbage and all things "pickled" of course. Yum. This is International Pickle Day's ninth year, and they are holding down the barrels at the Municipal Parking Lot on Broome Street. In past years, attendance has reached over 15,000, and this is a bigger location than year's past. New Yorkers must really love pickles!! In fact, this area used to be known as the Pickle District – who knew?

International Pickle Day is not just pickles though – there are a slew of vendors in attendance, and they are soaking all kinds of things in brine that you would never think could be soaked in brine. For example, fish, meat, eggs (??), beans, limes, mangos (!) – all soaked in brine and pickled for your pleasure. Some of the participants include Brooklyn Brine, Pickle Guys, Guss' Pickles, Two Boots Tavern, McClure's, Saxelby Cheese, Roni-Sue's Chocolates, and one of my all time faves, Peanut Butter & Co. So delicious. Although I hope they're just giving out samples of pb&j and not actually pickling peanut butter. I dont know how I feel about that..

Guss pickles

So if you want to find out what the big DILL is, come on down this Sunday, Oct 4th from 11 am – 4:30 pm. You can have all the pickles you can eat, and all you can eat, pickled. If that makes sense.
