No. 7 Sub at the Ace Hotel

When was the last time you had a really great sandwich?? Believe it or not, I'm not a HUGE fan of sandwiches, so if I'm going to eat one it better be good. Enter No. 7 Sub in the Ace Hotel.

If it weren't for word of mouth, I wouldnt even know that this place existed. There's barely any signage, yet there's usually a line out the door, so I guess that's the universal indicator of "good food is here." I don't normally like waiting for food, but I make the exception for certain places (read: Shake Shack) and No. 7 just melted and crunched it's way into that list. Their sandwiches are so weird and unique, I think you have to be a semi-adventurous eater to appreciate it. That said, if you put a blind-fold on me and told me to take a bite of one, I wouldn't be able to decipher EXACTLY what is in it anyway. The ingredients compliment, they don't overpower. Take, for example, the Zucchini Parm sandwich (also have Eggplant Parm sometimes) with THICK slices of breaded and fried zucchini, topped with sauce, cheese and…pickled jalapenos and barbecue potato chips. What?! I know it sounds weird, but they add crunch and a vinegary-spice, and it's just. so. good.

Another one I tried (and loved) was the Curry Chicken Salad with raisins, ramps and basil. This one was actually an interesting paradox because it was SO flavorful (and pungent) amongst the first few bites, but then it became heavy. VERY heavy. Fortunately I went halvsies with Gil on this one, so I only had half (and half of the braised short rib – also delicious but in a very different way). Did I mention the bread?? I have a weird, obsessive-compulsive thing I do with bread and if I explained it I'd probably sound insane so let's just say I ate MOST of this bread because it was THAT good. Amazing texture and density for these sandwiches.

I'm basically determined to try every sandwich this place has. I'm sure they're not ALL amazing, but I'd be willing to put in the time to do the research. Next up: fried oysters with pickled strawberries. I don't care for oysters but if you fry it, I'll try it. Yuck or yum? I guess we'll see…
