It’s Still #ColdandFlu Season – Make Eggs #NYTough Style (Giveaway)

The weather is starting to warm up in NYC! While this is great for most people, for me, it means I’m most likely going to get sick. I am one of those people that gets sick when the weather changes. Always. I don’t like change, what can I say.

There are a few things I like to stock up on when the temps rise and drop: Puffs tissues, Vicks Dayquil (and Nyquil because sleeping with a sinus infection is absolute misery), ginger ale, chicken broth, and eggs. Why eggs? Because they’re easy, versatile, and good for you. And I RARELY put things in my body that are good for it, so pay attention.

To that end, along with my Dayquil, I like to make this orange-lemon-honey concoction to drink when sick. It’s served hot and it looks like vomit, but it’s very soothing if you have a sore throat – plus it’s chock full of Vitamin C, so it’s great for a cold. That said, I post about that almost every year, so for this post, I’m going to go a different route and show all of you how to hard boil an egg, #NYTough style! Make like a New Yorker and push through that cold and do some extra work! If you don’t get a sick day for a cold, you sure as hell don’t get to slack on your cooking! Ok that’s not really fair or true, but wouldn’t it be nice to have some things to do with an egg? Scramble and eat with sriracha out of a mug, you lazy bum! Drop it into your chicken soup and stir – now you have chicken noodle egg drop soup! So many options.

That said, the question people ask me most is how to hard boil an egg. I know it sounds simple, but trust me, it takes some practice. Not to mention the fact that something called an “egg timer” exists, which makes me think that eggs operate on a different time schedule than we do, and that frightens me. So, I have a simple and effective method that will give you PERFECT hard boiled eggs every time. See pictures for proof. Same batch, no ugly gray rings, no uncooked yolks…basically, NOT ONE BAD EGG. Get it?

Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs, #NYTough Style

NEEDS:

5 eggs

Water

AGGRESSIVE DIRECTIONS:

1. Put eggs carefully in a medium saucepan/pot. Add cold water to the pot until the eggs are JUST covered.

2. On medium-high heat, bring eggs to a rolling boil. This will take a few minutes as you’re bringing them UP to a boil, not just waiting for the water to boil and then dropping them in.

3. A rolling boil means little bubbles floating to the top, starting off slow and then becoming faster. You don’t want huge “this is going to explode soon” type of bubbles. Picture a jacuzzi on it’s lowest setting.

4. When the eggs reach the rolling boiling point, follow these below steps and don’t argue with me:

SHUT OFF HEAT.

COVER THE EGGS (AKA PUT THE FRIGGIN LID ON THE POT).

REMOVE FROM HEAT (AKA MOVE TO ANOTHER BURNER).

SET YOUR ALARM FOR 13 MINUTES. THIRTEEN. OK?!

AFTER 13 MINS, DRAIN EGGS OF HOT WATER AND PLACE THEM IN A BOWL IN THE SINK.

RUN VERY COLD WATER OVER THE EGGS FOR A FEW MINUTES.

START TO PEEL THEM.

WHILE YOU’RE PEELING ONE, LEAVE THE OTHERS IN THE BOWL WITH THE RUNNING WATER ON THEM. SEE BELOW.

THAT’S PRETTY MUCH IT. HERE ARE PICS.

Eggs peel

Ahh peeling them. Even I still have trouble with this occasionally, as you can see. Some people can peel them easily in just a few pieces. I get lucky sometimes, but most of the time I have to peel them in little pieces. See above. I HAVE discovered that if you squeeze the egg gently all over after the initial crack, there is usually one larger piece that will crack. Go with that part first.

That’s all folks! I will be making deviled eggs now. Because deviled eggs are amazing.

  1. I LOVE THIS POST!!!! I cant wait to perfect my eggs!! Thanks for posting!! xo

  2. Oh and Vicks, you always know how to make me feel better when I am ill. Vapor rub the best! Now along with my perfect hard boiled eggs, I’ll rock out!

  3. this is awesome. too often have i either 1) exploded the eggs onto my ceiling by a) not using a timer B) forgetting about them because as you said, time is different for eggs and we just don’t seem to see eye to eye on the subject or 2) over cooked them to a point where Dr. Seuss would have been proud. But now, these days of exploding green eggs are far behind me thanks to you. and yes, deviled eggs are AWESOME. i love puffs! a girls’ got sensitive skin you know? paper towels and toilet paper just make me look like a red nosed clown, and not in a ‘aww you’re so funny and cute’ way. I get allergies, and my nose is their first victim, so I need to have tissues with me that aren’t going to feel like sand paper. puffs is the way to go and is always my pick of choice when i need a little tissue love.

  4. PUFF plus lotion completes me.

Puffs and eggs just go together! #Puffsforever

  12. I’ve been a dedicated Vicks user for 20+ years…I’m basically addicted to it at this point and keep a jar on my nightstand to keep the stuffies at bay. The invention of Puffs + Vicks flipped my world upside-down. Now when I have the sniffles I can go into my office and rather than having a slicked up nose of grease (my preferred spot to put it), I can blow my nose into the plush Puffs that are scented with Vicks. It’s a win-win! And yum, eggs. I think I should eat lunch now. Nom nom.

  13. Vicks is my favorite product. Thanks for the chance to win

  14. Hard boiled eggs perfection.

Wow great post, sometimes the simplest things are the hardest. Nothings more comforting than eggs and toast when you feel lousy. Whats better is not feeling your nose is going to peel off from all the sniffling. My favorite brand of tissues are Puffs because they are soft and add Aloe Vera.
Ah soft tissues and hard boiled eggs it just doesnt get better.
