Williamsburg has gone through much gentrification since my move here two years ago, and yet the one thing I always felt it was lacking was good Chinese food. There’s decent Chinese food here, but nothing I have ever actually craved before. That is, until Brooklyn Wok Shop opened. I stopped by here a few weeks ago and got a pretty comprehensive tasting (read my full review on The Strong Buzz here), and I wanted to post a few of the pics here so you can see the deliciousness. Chef Edric Har and his wife Melissa run this joint, and they take a lot of pride in their food, from washing all meat and produce with filtered water to using antibiotic and hormone-free meat. The portions are generous, and did I mention the hot sauce?? Homemade my Chef Har, this spicy combination of chilies, oil, garlic and anchovies has been a recipe two years in the making, and it is seriously addictive. I’m mildly obsessed with it…if you try for yourself you will see!

Big bowl of fresh wonton soup

Yes the “Beef with Broccoli” is made with a tender cut of hangar steak, the vegetables are also crisp and fresh, not overly squishy and soggy. The noodles in all the soups are handmade by Chef Har every day, and the stock is home made as well. Two thumbs up!

Soy and cinnamon-glazed wings

Super saucy glazed wings have a good amount of heat and you can really taste the sweetness from the cinnamon. If saucy wings ain’t yo thang, I would highly recommend a fluffy pork bun instead.

Meaty pork on fluffy buns!

One of my favorites of the meal was the General Tso’s chicken. Super crispy pieces of fried chicken tossed in a tangy and spicy sauce of ginger, soy, and chilies. Perfect with the crisp pieces of broccoli and rice. I took seconds…maybe thirds…

Crunch crunch crunch…General Tsos

And lastly, the Egg Tart for dessert, which is made with a French pate sucre crust (tastes like a flaky butter cookie!), is a slightly sweet ending to a great meal.

Doesnt look like much, but really tasty

I look forward to many more meals at Brooklyn Wok Shop, and hope that they start bottling the hot sauce…

I have posted about this place before, but that’s because it’s just so damn good! I visited for lunch again last week and took some gorgeous pictures that I thought I’d share. Just in case you weren’t hungry enough already..

Burrata cheese with toasted cauliflower and oil. Amazing.

The raw bar here is fantastic, but I’m not a huge oyster fan, so I went with a classic lobster roll instead. I am very happy I did because it was delicious – lobster chunks, mayo, celery, sea salt and dill on a toasted buttered roll..

Lobster Roll Perfection

Lastly, we tried one of the specials, which was a root vegetable hash with potatoes, red pepper sauce, garlic and onions. It was savory with a hint of sweetness from the roasted garlic and peppers..

Mmm hash.

I am probably the last person who should be touting Valentine’s Day – even when I was in a relationship I despised this holiday – but I realize some of you happy couples out there might be interested in it and still need some options for where to go. I have comprised a little list of a few places that have good prix-fixe deals and/or free champagne at the very least.

On this edition of Restaurant Week Roundup, we will be traveling to Asia and India via Pranna in Flatiron, and then back to the states with some New England clam chowder and seafood from Ed’s Chowder House on the UWS. The main difference I will point out here immediately would be portion sizes. A big issue I have (and what I imagine most people have) with RW is that (usually) the portion sizes are small, but Ed’s Chowder House wins that battle hands and spoons down. Details to follow..

Located in the Empire Hotel, Ed’s Chowder House is a lovely restaurant situated across the street from Lincoln Center in the heart of the Upper West Side. The ambiance is lively but not loud, the decor is a bit nautical, and the crowd is a mix of locals (read: older) and young business casual types. It’s a good place for a date or for a family dinner – you can’t really go wrong here. The RW menu sounded promising, and we were even more impressed with the portions (as mentioned above). The New England clam chowder was served in a huge bowl, with chunks of bacon, potato and clam floating throughout. I don’t even LIKE clams but I felt I couldn’t go to Ed’s Chowder House without trying the CHOWDA. It was delicious. Nick (my dining date for the evening) and I just put the bowl in the middle of the table and shared the whole thing. Chowin down on chowder.

Chowda.

For mains, I had the shrimp and squash risotto, and Nick had the salmon. Shrimp and squash risotto was good but oh-so-buttery. Nothing wrong with butter by any means, but I felt like I could oil up an entire person with the amount of butter in there. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the pieces were large, however I felt the rice could have used a few more stirs around the pan..it was a little al dente for my taste.

The salmon was actually a much better call. Very tender and flaky, almost sweet, the salmon sat atop mustard greens with a toasted barley and roasted shallot vinaigrette. The balance of flavors were excellent, and the vinaigrette didn’t overpower the salmon.

Winner winner salmon dinner.

Truth be told, we could have done without dessert, but thank god we didn’t pass this one up. The chocolate tart with espresso ice cream (Nick had vanilla – boo) was just magical. The chocolate was smooth, dense, and very rich, paired with the slightly strong espresso ice cream, it was indulgent. I can’t describe it any other way except for pure. chocolate. bliss.

I cant deal.

Now let’s spice things up a bit. Pranna is a large restaurant/bar/lounge in Flatiron (great for private parties by the way), with Southeast Asian and Indian influence in the cuisine. Ange was my dining date for this meal, and we both thought that it was a really nice place to go for drinks post-work, as well as a date. Just ask the couple next to us sitting next to each other (I hate that) and making out the entire time (hate that even more). I prefer drinks with my dinner, not voyeurism. But anyway…

The waiter brought out some complimentary cauliflower naan with tomato chutney and raita. My first question is, why has this not replaced regular bread in ALL restaurants?! It was SO good. So fresh and hot, the bread was slightly chewy and had a nice onion and herb flavor. The tomato chutney was a nice addition also – made it taste like an Indian version of pizza. YUM. We ordered an extra serving because it was that good.

Seriously. So good.

The appetizers were good, but nothing too impressive. Dumplings with a nice soy dipping sauce, and hangar steak with palm sugar ponzu sauce, gorgonzola, and way too much cilantro. We know how I feel about cilantro. However, the steak was cooked perfectly and I liked the gorgonzola/ponzu sauce a lot. So I suppose that one was a win.

Mmm gorgonzola and steak..

The chicken tikka masala was by far the better entree. If you’ve never had it before, it’s usually chicken marinated in yogurt and spices, then stewed in a toasted spice and tomato-yogurt sauce. It sounds odd but it’s very good and very spicy. Pranna’s version has huge chunks of chicken in a boatload of sauce (now you know why we asked for more naan), served with rice of course. When you’re eating something this saucy and spicy, you need to pour it over some jasmine rice. YUM.

I had the chili glazed prawns…and guess what?! No heads! Thank god. I specifically asked the waiter if the shrimp had heads. That’s how serious I am about this. It was tasty, but the portion was small and to be honest, it tasted like almost any other “chili-glazed shrimp” dish I’ve had. It wasn’t bad at all, with a nice amount of heat, but it didn’t do anything to stand out…le sigh.

Here’s something I’ve never had before: a roti pancake. Similar to a crepe, this was “roti” (South Asian flatbread) filled with bananas, cream, and drizzled with dark chocolate sauce. Yum. This is a heavy dessert with a gooey texture, but it’s definitely worth it if you’re craving something chocolatey. Which I basically always am.

Crispy shell and gooey chocolate sauce

Happy Eating!

Yesterday’s game made me lose hair and a few collective inches from my fingernails, but it was worth it!! I just had to give the G-Men a shout out for their 21-17 victory of the New England Patriots! Even though the Giants could NOT take down that invisible forcefield around Tom Brady, they still managed to come through with a win.

I am calling this part one because I have a few more RW reservations this week (I know, shocking isn’t it?), so there will likely be additions. Not to mention I haven’t posted since last week so I figured it was about time to stop being lazy and start typing. The joys of creative writing…

If you have been living in New York City for longer than six months, chances are you have been around for one of the seasons to experience Restaurant Week. It happens in the Winter and the Summer, and it’s a cheap way to test out some of the normally out of reach restaurants. Lunch menus are $24.07 (I still don’t understand that weird number) for three courses, and dinner menus are $35.00 for three courses. I have been to numerous places for Restaurant Week and I can tell you that some treat it as an opportunity while others treat it like a chore that robs them of their grandiosity and creativity. To those few, listen, I’ve read Anthony Bourdain’s books – I know chefs don’t live to turn out rounds and rounds of the same, cheap meals for a prix-fix pricetag, but in my opinion, if the Restaurant Week is good, then that means the regular dinner must be GREAT. And I usually find this to be the case. My previous post on Perilla is a good example of a nice, well-executed RW menu. And guess what?! The regular menu is just as delicious (if not more so).

I tend to ramble if no one stops me. Another joy of creative writing.

Anyway. Restaurant Week at Centrico. Some of you may know the chef, Aaron Sanchez, from the Food Network; I like him a lot on TV, but I have to say I wasn’t thrilled with the entire dinner. The space at Centrico has a nice ambiance for a date, but it wasn’t very crowded, so if you’re looking for more of a scene, I’d say go to Rosa Mexicano or Dos Caminos. I enjoyed the guacamole and chips very much, though I think that guac and chips should be included on the Restaurant Week menu as a pre-appetizer or amuse bouche of sorts. I’ve been to a few Mexican places that do this for RW and I think it’s smart. Because when you think about it, who goes to a Mexican restaurant and doesn’t order guac and chips?? Ludicrous.

Good guac

The mushroom quesadillas with salsa verde were tasty – I think I actually liked these better than my entree. Flour tortillas stuffed with mushrooms and cheese, then dipped in salsa verde for that extra kick. Nums. Normally mushroom and cheese is a bland combination, but even without the salsa verde these had a good taste. My salmon entree served over olive, tomato and serrano pepper sauce was good but nothing I haven’t had before. I love olives, but this was a little too salty/briny for my taste.

Dessert. I’m going to make this short. Tres Leches cake. I have no idea what was on this but it was very sweet. Amen. Centrico is not a bad choice by any means, but I don’t think you will be blown away by the food.

Moving on. Restaurant Week at Marble Lane. If you like trendy steakhouses, then this is the place for you, my friend! Located in the swank and sexy Dream hotel downtown in the Meatpacking District, Marble Lane has solid food but a slightly unimpressive RW menu. Also, this is unrelated but it was definitely a challenge finding the bathroom – the place is huge. I just remember making a lot of lefts and going down a spiral staircase into a large co-ed bathroom.

Interior

Talking about the bathroom is a great way to segue into the food, don’t you think? I have to say one of my favorite parts of the meal were the parmesan cracker-crisps they bring you in lieu of bread. The tuna tartare appetizer was very good, but I didn’t like the cucumbers underneath it, they didn’t really add anything to the dish – they were just there. I’m going to assume they serve a decorative purpose more so than anything else (see evidence below).

Is it a flower or is it tuna??

Here’s something to keep in mind if you do a steakhouse for RW – since these are usually very expensive places with very expensive cuts of meat, you can expect to see a small filet as the only steak option. Some places have the balls to not even HAVE steak on the menu (which is crap, for lack of a better word), but fortunately Marble Lane offered a 6 oz center cut filet with sauce Diane and a few large shallots sitting on top of it. The meat was cooked perfectly, however it was literally a piece of meat on a plate. This is how most steakhouses do things, so I understand, but when you eat at a steakhouse you ALWAYS get sides. Because you have to. There’s something a bit barbaric about eating a chunk of meat all by itself off of a clean white plate. I need some greens or something to make me feel less like a puma and more like a lady. We missed that mark, so not only did we devour the steaks, but we were still kind of hungry. Fail.

Nums

Dessert at Marble Lane was good but not great; as with many trendy restaurants, it looked more impressive than it actually was. The pumpkin cheesecake was full of pumpkin spice, but the texture was a little hard and grainy. The Rocky Mountain (Devil’s food cake, choc mousse) was decent, but aside from the bits of caramel corn studded on top, it wasn’t very chocolatey. Devil’s food is called that for a reason – it’s so good it’s Devilish! I’m obviously getting tired…my jokes are getting worse by the minute.

Caramel Corn +1

More to come from Pranna and Ed’s Chowder House!

PERILLAAAAAA!! I want to fall to my knees a la Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and bellow this from the depths of my soul. PERILLAAAAAAA!!!

Dramatic? Maybe. There is a reason, I promise, and that reason just might be made of duck. My friend Gil (who, you may have noticed, has been upgraded from <del>cubemate</del> to “friend”), has been going on and on about Perilla since we’ve met, and since I absolutely LOVED the meal, I felt it might be time to upgrade Gil from <del>cubemate</del> to “friend”. So congrats Gil, you are officially my “friend”. Be happy – not many people get to enjoy this privilege. And not many people get to dine with the Mayor of Perilla either; Gil checked in on Foursquare and was announced Mayor because he has been there so many times. A night of good fortune, I say! FYI being the Mayor of a restaurant has it’s perks…read on to see what I’m referring to.

Perilla is located in the West Village near a bunch of your favorite dives like Down the Hatch, but you can expect to see a slightly more buttoned up clientele here; it’s not fancy by any means, but it’s modern and warm, and the dim lighting doesn’t hurt either. I’d recommend Perilla as a good date spot.

Normally I take the lead on menu decisions, but in this case, I was with the “Mayor”, so I let him guide me on a few things. I did the Restaurant Week menu, and then we ordered a few things off of the regular/bar menu. From the Restaurant Week menu: mussels in ham, chervil and Riesling cream sauce for appetizer, pappardelle pasta with bacon, black trumpet mushrooms and braised kale for entree, and vanilla bean bread pudding for dessert (all for $35 – gotta love RW!). Gil ordered the spicy duck meatballs as an appetizer and the spicy duck burger from the bar menu as an entree. We split everything, so if you’re thinking that’s way too much duck, you’re WRONG.

Mussels were plump, but it was really all about the sauce. Isn’t it always? I’m pretty sure half of the people who order mussels do so for the “bread dunked in sauce” factor. The spicy duck meatballs on the other hand. Oh. My. God. If you think you don’t like duck, you need to taste these first. Sitting in a spicy and flavorful jus, four little meatballs are topped with a quail egg that you break ever so delicately over the top, then, you spoon one into your mouth and let it just…melt. The spice is not super hot, it’s more of a mild heat that stays with you to the last bite. You can taste the sweetness of the meat and there is considerably more fat which makes it more tender than a regular meatball. So delicious. Someone…hold me.

Little bites of nums.

The entrees were a continuation of tastebud glory. Hats off to Chef Harold Dieterle (a Top Chef alum) for putting together one of the most delicious menus I have had in a while. The pappardelle pasta was on the salty side, but it was damn good anyway. I will risk high blood pressure for that pasta – loaded with brown butter and bacon, (there’s your salt culprits!) the kale and mushrooms added a nice earthiness to it – a great pasta for winter. Good thing we shared though, because that one was heavy.

salty but scrump.

Now. The spicy duck burger. Imagine those heavenly meatballs I described two paragraphs ago, just remove the egg, and put it on an onion bun with some jack cheese and avocado. Drool. Fest. Keep in mind this is only on the bar menu, so if you want to stick with the RW menu you’re shit out of luck. I would definitely splurge for this burger though ($16); if you’ve never had a duck burger, this would be the place to try it. It’s juicy, buttery texture is not like any other burger I’ve ever had. The avocado just makes it sexy. Yea you heard me – I’m calling a burger sexy!

NOW do you get it?!

I’m going to interrupt the lovefest here for ONE second to discuss the only disappointing dish of the night: the bread pudding. Maybe it’s RW, or maybe Chef Harold should stick to meat, because this was not very good. It was dry. Bread pudding is supposed to be a moist, creamy blob (for lack of a better word) of bread pieces, and this was just…dry. And not very flavorful. Fortunately, the “Mayor” was in the house, so we received the “Take 5 Sundae” ON the house! A sundae inspired by a candy bar? Awesome. Peanut butter ice cream, pretzels, dulce de leche, chocolate syrup and whipped cream. If you don’t like this combination, I don’t want to know you.

I had to jump in here and say something, because if either of these bills pass, sites like mine (and many more much larger ones) will be privy to the censorship of the US Government. If you haven’t heard or read about the SOPA or PIPA acts yet, click here and watch the video. Because if you’re reading this, chances are you will agree that it’s a load of bullshit.

To give you a brief rundown of these acts: the US Government will have the ability to shut down, sue, or even send people to jail for infringing ONE link or ONE piece of copyrighted material on their blog or website. Big corporations may cut off funding sources to infringing websites by having US-based advertisers cancel their accounts, PIPA can sue US-based search engines, blogs and forums to have links removed, and some sites may even be blacklisted, meaning they won’t show up in search engines. If passed, these acts can cripple startup companies as well (who rely on a lot of social media tactics), simply if the Government feels that they aren’t filtering their content well enough. Social media websites like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook can look like piracy magnets and will be open for censorship and abuse; and since they will be tampering with DNS (Domain Name Systems) and security, the internet will become less safe and less reliable at the same time. Users can be sent to jail for years simply for using a video clip or copyrighted song in their blog or website. The “Solution” is about as bad, if not worse, than the “Problem”.

The vast database where you can find practically anything, speak your mind, and share content is being attacked and for what? Because someone used a Lady Gaga song in the background of one of their YouTube videos? The scary thing is, some folks would say yes, that makes sense. And thus begins the breakdown of one of the greatest forms of technology ever created: the internet. I can sum this up in two words: THIS BLOWS. Not very poignant, but the truth.

This is especially a problem for small sites (like mine) who don’t have the ability/money to defend themselves. I’m all for trying to stop piracy of copyrighted material, but where is the line? The Government is tampering with the internet so people will put even MORE money into Hollywood entertainment. #REALLY? Believe me if I had the opportunity to take back some of the money I’ve spent on the CRAP that Hollywood puts out there these days, I would. Example. Fast Five in the movie theater: $12. Honey Badger or Shit Girls Say on YouTube: $0. Yea that about sums it up. Seriously I’m not even kidding.

If you want to help and try to put a stop to this, click here and sign the online petition. I know I did.

When was the last time you had South African food? Hmmm yea…about that. I don’t think I ever have, but I had a great experience at Madiba recently in Fort Greene. My friend Lauren had her birthday dinner here on New Year’s Day, and despite some wait time and tight dining conditions, it was really good food. I would love to go back with a smaller group, but I got a nice sampling of food this way, so believe me I’m glad I was involved. I will also add that they gave us a free bottle of wine to make up for the wait time (we had a reservation at 8:30 and didn’t get seated til after 9), and they gave us a free round of shots at the end of the meal for Lauren’s birthday too. So ok…at least they did what they could…or they just wanted to get us drunk so hopefully we would forget. Let’s dive in…

How much do I love chicken wings? Let me put it to you this way, if you gave me a choice of only one appetizer to eat for the rest of my life at every meal, wings would probably be it. We shared the organic chicken wings Peri Peri – wings basted in a spicy dried pepper oil with garlic and vinegar. These wings were on the small side, but very flavorful with a lot of kick, I highly recommend more than one order for a group of ten because these went QUICK…

I. Heart. Wings.

I learned during my meal at Madiba that spices and vinegar are essential ingredients to the cuisine. The fries or “slap chips” as they are called here, are soaked in vinegar then tossed with salt and served in a paper bag with ketchup. The vinegar is great, but I frown slightly upon the decision of putting them in a paper bag because this caused them to steam and made them soggy. If the fries were crispy it would have been a 10 instead of an 8 on the delicious french fry scale. We still gobbled most of them up, but we waited over 30 mins to be seated (PAST our reservation time), so we were just a bit hungry. The fried calamari was also excellent – these stayed crispy and the tartar sauce was nice and tangy. Yum.

Soggy but solid…

For my main dish, I got “Pap & Vleis”, lamb chops served with white cornmeal (pap) and chakalaka. Chaka who? Chaka Khan? None of us knew what that was either, and after a few minutes of “boom chakalaka” jokes, we read the description (we’re so smart) to discover that Chakalaka is a spicy mix of baked beans, carrots, tomatoes and onions. The lamb chops were slightly overcooked, but not terribly so, and the flavor was awesome with all of the spices. I really liked this chakalaka business too – I wanted to soak it up with bread but there was none around so I used the lamb chops and fries instead. Oh what a hardship.

Dessert time! I read some reviews on this place before going, and the reviews were all raving about one thing: malva pudding. Again no idea what it was, so I read the description: “a sweet, spongy caramelized pudding of Dutch origin made with apricot jam”. Now you know my feelings on jam, but I still wasn’t overly impressed, though I forced myself to order it based on the waiters reaction when I asked about it – he said it’s their most popular dessert. A few moments later, I understood why. OH. MY. GOD. This thing was good – my crappy pic doesn’t do it justice so ignore that. Served with vanilla ice cream, it’s a small sponge cake with a caramelized sugar crust all around it, you dig your fork into the cake and come out with a just-sweet-enough bite. The inside is made with apricot jam, then soaked in a sugar-cream mixture, giving it a just-sweet-enough taste and a moist texture. No one wanted to order it, and yet everyone at the table wanted a second bite once they tasted it. #win

Thanks to a rather unpleasant experience with Four Loko the night before this, I didn’t drag myself out of bed until the afternoon, so I couldn’t take advantage of the drink that comes with the brunch deal for $14.95 (one Bloody Mary, Mimosa or draft beer with your entree), but I still had a late brunch with a good friend, a rather large serving of fried onion straws, a giant grilled cheese, and washed it all down with an iced tea. Ahhh hangovers.

Two Door Tavern has popped up on my radar a few times and I never managed to make it over there even though it’s five blocks from my apartment. The bi level space is what I like to call Williamsburg-chic: lots of wood, glass fixtures, no frills. I have to admit that I think their regular menu sounds more intriguing than their brunch menu, but it was still good and I would definitely go back. I ordered the Tuscan Grilled Cheese with mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, sliced tomato, and sun dried tomato aioli. The sandwich comes with fries or onion straws, and I am a sucker for onion straws (not to be confused with rings) so I opted for those. Onion straws are very, very thinly sliced onions, battered and fried to crispy and slightly spicy perfection – Two Door Tavern serves them with a spicy ketchup that was just perfect. The sandwich on the other hand was a little cold; a grilled cheese should be nice and HOT. This was not. The taste was good (and loaded with prosciutto) so it was kind of upsetting, and I thought about sending it back for a reheat, but it took a while to arrive in the first place so I thought better of that plan and just ate the slightly cold sandwich.

Tuscan Grilled Cheese and fried onion straws

Ange (my late brunch date) ordered the Maple Pecan Chicken Sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich is a chicken cutlet with baby spinach, tomato, and honey balsamic sauce on focaccia. The sweet potato fries are also served with a cinnamon-honey dipping sauce, which Ange was a BIG fan of – sweet and creamy, it made the fries almost taste like a dessert. She is a sauce-nut, so I trust her opinion on these things – I tasted a few (with and without sauce) and they were yum.

Maple Pecan Chicken Sandwich and sauces

I really want to go back to Two Door Tavern for the regular menu…fried pickles, bacon wrapped stuffed dates, homemade pigs in a blanket, philly cheese steak spring rolls…yes. I need that in my life soon. And if you do go for brunch, please note that they have red velvet pancakes on the menu. I didn’t try them but they sound glorious.
