It’s Fat Tuesday!

Fat Tuesday Kitty

In addition to Tuesday Tastes, let's talk about Fat Tuesday, the gluttonous celebration of food and alcohol indicative to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Never having been there myself, I am glad that New York City takes it upon itself to recreate anything that requires a steel colon and a hard-working liver. So where can you find some awesome FT specials around here? See below..

Galway Hooker – $8 Maker's Mark Bourbon cocktails, $5 Bloody Mary's, $6 Hurricanes. I believe I discussed Hurricanes recently in a recent HH post..if you haven't tried one yet, this would be your opportunity.  7 East 36th Street btwn 5th and Madison

Windfall – A good spot for the fellas! Only female bartenders tonight, with 2 for 1 Hurricanes and jello shots from 5-7 pm. Hey nowwww.   23 West 39th St btwn 5th and 6th aves

Live Bait – Duh. If you've never been here this place is a cajun theme bar/restaurant with pretty solid grub like jerk chicken, peel n' eat shrimp, clams, oysters (blech) and dirty rice. Mmm dirty rice. They have a $5 HH from 4:30-7 pm with specialty drinks like hurricanes (they will be everywhere today) and sweet tea vodka/lemonade.  14 East 23rd St nr. Madison

McFadden's – Leave it to the Irish to use any excuse to drink in excess! They're taking it to the next level here: 6pm- 12am Fat Tuesday specials will consist of $1 drafts, $2 wine, $3 call drinks and 1/2 price apps. Holy crap. And there's a $100 cash prize to the lady who gets the most beads. This place is usually a slop-fest anyway, so this one should be interesting…  800 Second Ave nr. 42nd st

Calico Jack's Cantina – Right next door to McFadden's and giving them a run for their money with $1 drafts, $2 well drinks, $3 frozen margs and 1/2 priced apps. The food is also better here – though not sure how many people are actually looking to eat? I know I could go for some creole shrimp..  802 Second Ave nr. 42nd st (and McFaddens)

The Mean Fiddler – Unfortunately located in Times Square, but they do have $4 "Big Easy" shots, $4 beers and $6 Hurricanes. They will also have contests and giveaways with cash prizes and a trip to New Orleans.  266 West 47th St btwn 7th and 8th aves

Unfortunately I'm missing this one :(  I am being a good daughter and cooking dinner for my dad and his Gluten-free girlfriend tonight. Not exactly like Mardi Gras, but maybe I can sneak some FT in there. Is there gluten in rum…?

  1. Agreed, Bob Lesson is a unique bloke. I don’t think I have ever seen him without a smile on his face!
The one saying that he shared in my birthday card many years ago has stuck with me ever since……..”you don’t stop playing when you get old, you only get old when you stop playing!”
I now write this in everyone else’s birthday card instead!
