Monday Smorgasbord – April 4th

Mondays are so depressing…but knowing that chocolate and booze are on the way makes it a little better…

Open

Vai Spuntino Bar: New spot in Soho that serves up appetizers that are "meant for sharing". The menu consists of many different categories such as "Crudo" (Arctic char),  "Lightly Cooked" (Chorizo, rock shrimp), "Slow Cooked" (short ribs, halibut), "Cured" (foie gras, spec), "Pane" (pizzetta) and "Desserts" (white chocolate cheesecake, beignets).  105 Thompson St, nr Prince St. 212-226-1146

Foodie Fun

Varli Food Festival: On Thursday April 7th, head down to Chelsea to celebrate (and taste) the fine Indian cuisine of NYC. Sample from over 25 eateries including Devi, Junoon and Tulsi, along with unlimited drinks. Holler. After all, you might need something cold to wash down all that heat. Guest appearances will include chefs Peter Beck (Tamarind) and Vikas Khanna (Junoon), and Asian TV star Sanjeev Kapoor (who will also be doing a special prix fixe dinner on Tuesday, Apr 5th – more info below). Tickets are $100 pp and can be purchased here. The event will start at 6 pm at the Altman Building, 135 West 18th St between 6th and 7th aves.

Tasting at Tulsi with Sanjeev Kapoor: As mentioned above, Kapoor will be joining Tulsi's chef Hemant Mathur for a special prix-fixe dinner to promote his new book, How To Cook Indian, and of course, the Varli Food Festival. The feast will include two dishes from the new book as well as some of Chef Mathurs specialties from Tulsi. $85 pp or $120 with wine pairings, and you will also get a signed copy of the book. 212-888-0820 for reservations.

Tenpenny Launches Lunch – They launched happy hour (which they call The Session) on Friday, and starting today, the relatively new midtown bar/restaurant will introduce it's new lunch menu, which includes a $21 prix-fixe called the Madison Avenue Lunch: soup or salad, choice of sandwich, Tenpenny slaw and petit fours. Not too shabby if I do so say myself. Click here to check out the menu. They have a truffled steak sandwich with melted onions on black olive bread. Mmmm. 16 East 46th Street, at the Gotham Hotel

Manhattan Cocktail Classic: Hasn't started yet (May 13-17), but the tickets are already on sale for this booze-soaked weekend. If you've ever wanted to learn more about mixology or the history of whiskey, there are 30 classes here for you that can help. Personally, I'd like to attend "How To Behave in a Bar", because I'm not sure I know how to do that yet. And I know for a fact some of my friends could use that class. Some of the classes are taught by famed mixologists like Tony Abou-Ganim, Dave Wondrich, and Dale Degroff. Tickets are $50 per class, and you can check out the full listing and schedule of classes here.

Serious Chocolate at Camaje: Need I really say more? This cooking class is all about how to work with chocolate and make delicious things like Molten Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Souffle, Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies, Chocolate Creme Brullee, Truffles and more. Saturday, Apr 9 from 10 am – 2 pm, $95 pp or 2 for $175. Click here to sign up.  I have taken a few cooking classes before here and while the space is very small, you get to cook in a real NYC kitchen which is pretty cool. Not to mention I walked away with some great recipes and tips..

  3. My idea is to invite cartoonists like you to donate original art made especially for a book about Parkinson’s awareness in Richard’s honor. All profits from sales of the book would benefit the Michael J Fox Foundation, and the original art would be auctioned as part of the fundraiser. Additionally, there could be a limited number of “deluxe edition” books signed and numbered by all contributing artists also for auction. I am waiting to hear from publishers at this time.
