Monday Smorgasbord: May 23

This week in food looks like…tastings (and Fleet Week!)

Places I'd Like to Try ASAP:

Tenpenny – This modern American restaurant in the Gotham Hotel boasts something called The Session (their idea of happy hour) from 4-7 pm, and it carries it's own menu. Cheese, oysters, crostini, homemade chips and pork belly croquettes? Don't mind if I do. It might cost you a little more than ten pennies, but it's still pretty affordable. Click here for menu. 16 East 46th st, 212-490-8300

Brushstroke – David Bouley's latest (in collaboration with the Tsuji Cooking School of Osaka) on Hudson Street in Tribeca has gotten solid reviews, and the menu sounds too intriguing to pass up. And by intriguing I mean I have no idea what some of the menu tastes like, but I'd like to find out. Chawan-mushi Egg Custard? Hmmm.. 30 Hudson st, 212-791-3771

Places YOU Should Try ASAP:

Social Eatz – Top Chef alum Angelo Sosa's midtown joint is like fancy fast-foo (burgers, wings, tacos) all with an Asian twist. I ate here last week and tried the Bibimbap Burger, which was crowned Best Burger in America by Eater. Stay tuned for that one…but believe me it's worth visiting. 232 East 53rd st, 212-207-3339

Asellina – This new Italian restaurant in the Gansevoort Park Hotel is swanky and sophisticated at the same time. It's in the Gansevoort, how could it not be? The food was delicious and the service was surprisingly friendly. The white sangria and stuffed olives with veal and parmesan cheese won me over immediately..420 Park Ave South, 212 -317-2908

The Smorgasburg – The food-exclusive version of the Brooklyn Flea in my native Williamsburg opened this Saturday. Some of NYC's greatest farmers and vendors set up shop on North 6th st by the water to serve us food and drink. Amen. Stay tuned for review and click here for full list of vendors.

Foodie Fun:

Bourbon and Barbecue Tasting at Hill Country, May 24th at 6 pm. For $65 pp you'll get four courses paired with bourbon cocktails, and a discussion on authentic Texan food and barbecue. Who wouldn't want 4 rounds of bourbon on a Tuesday? For reservations call 212-255-4544 or email Emily@hillcountryny.com

Tequila Tasting at Dos Caminos on May 24th sponsored by El Tesoro Tequila. I guess Hill Country's got some competition. This one is a bit cheaper ($55 pp), but you also get one less course paired with select tequilas. Hmm decisions, decisions… For reservations call 212-331-0238 or email events@brguestinc.com

It's Fleetweek! The big ships dock and unload a bunch of sailors into Manhattan. There will be a festival taking place this Saturday and Sunday near Times Sq too. Yes I realize this has nothing to do with food, but I felt it was worth mentioning, especially for the ladies. If you get hungry, pick up a pretzel or something.

  1. If you click on the MP3 link below, you’ll hear a backing track of “The Thrill is Gone” in Bm with some simple Pentatonic solo riffs. I’ve also experimented a bit with some of the delay capabilities, though honestly I don’t think I did the effects justice. Still you can get a sense of the quality of the backing tracks and the built-in tones.

  2. Hi ,thanks for this post.
******The job market is constantly moving and growing and if HR professionals are not on top of this movement they and their company can be doomed. As second city alum and HR professional, I’ve always advocated for basic improv training not just in hr, but for all professionals in general.
