Good Vibes and Good Vino at Wine Spot

The name of this place might seem generic, but really, it’s a small SPOT in the West Village that serves WINE…with delicious small plates of food to boot. I think they should get points for directness, no? I settled in here on a rather rainy and gloomy Tuesday evening with my girl Shari, only to have my spirits and mood lifted by the warm, wood-laden ambiance, the friendly service, and the unmistakable scent of cheese in the air. Ahhh..relax. It just gets better.

The downstairs area of Wine Spot is even cozier than the top floor, if you can believe it, and the tiny kitchen pumps out delicious apps for you while you sip your wine and unwind after a long day. While we sat there and caught up on life, Shari and I decided to order a few items from the menu to sample. Ok, I’m being modest. We ordered so much that they had to push another table together for us. Sorry I’m not sorry..? We started with the mixed greens salad with parmigiano cheese, dried cranberries, and slivered almonds. So simple, yet so good. The salty bite of the cheese, the sweet tangy cranberries, and the crunchy almonds…perfect palate cleanser.

The Venezuelan arepas were good but they were so hot I kept burning myself. You would think I would just wait for them to cool down like a normal person, but I have not much self control in this department. They were filled with shredded beef (though they have other fillings), and the corn bread exterior was nice and crispy, which is very important in the arepa game.

I have trouble going to a wine bar and not getting meat or cheese. It just doesn’t feel right? I actually wonder sometimes how vegans do it? But I digress. So we ordered the Spanish chorizo with Thai chili dipping sauce, and the mushroom and cheese fondue in a bread bowl. A BREAD BOWL. I know, caps are aggressive, but you have no idea how aggressive I feel about bread bowls. Can’t get enough and they are not nearly as prominent on the every day menu as I would like them to be. Though I suppose my arteries are happy about it. This one was so delicious, and they serve it to you with a whole bowl of sliced baguette bread. So not only are you eating bread that has been SOAKING in cheese for almost an hour, but you are dipping more bread into the heavenly cheese/bread mixture. Life doesn’t get much better than that, friends.

Wine Spot also does Flamenco shows on Sundays and Thursdays, which is really fun to watch in such an intimate setting. But if that’s not your speed, I still recommend this place for a date, or even by yourself on any given work day.
