Happy 2020! What Can I Say?

No but really. I’ve been sitting here staring at this screen for a while and trying to come up with something poignant to say.

I got nothin.

I mean…it’s just kind of cliche to talk about resolutions, and now it’s become cliche to talk about NOT having resolutions. So what is left to even say?

I could say 2019 was a year of growth. Also cliche.

I could say 2019 was a year of lessons. Ugh I want to punch myself in the face for even typing that.

The truth is, every year is a year of growth and change and lessons. That’s just how time works. If you managed to make it another year in your life and didn’t change or learn ANYTHING at all, I’d assume you were in a coma.

Time moves forward whether you want it to or not. It’s what you do with your time that shapes your “new year”. And anyone who does the whole “new year, new me” thing, just stop. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again. If you were a piece of shit in 2019, there’s a good chance you’ll be a piece of shit in 2020.

I’m not saying people can’t change, I’m just saying be realistic. Don’t expect the asshole you’re dating to wake up in 2020 and NOT be an asshole. At least not in the span of 24 hours. We all look at the new year as a new YEAR but it’s really just a new DAY. You have 364 days left to make it a new year, you know what I mean?

Set and manage your expectations. With yourself and with other people. You can only control what you do, not what others do. YOU can stop texting him. YOU can stop replying to her. YOU can stop eating Oreos (I can’t but we’re not talking about me).

Give yourself a break. It’s just another day. Changes take time, effort, and drive. If you want it bad enough, you’ll do it. Only you know when you’ve reached your limit. I’m the type of person who really has to let myself get beaten down into the ground emotionally before I make a change. Just being honest.

Take a look at your life and who’s in it. Think about some of your best moments of 2019. And also give a nod to some of your worst. If you come out of that little exercise with a smile, that’s a pretty good start to the new year.

Because the new year is just an extension of the old year. Hope you make the best of it.

Happy New Year everyone!

PS Tacos & Dreams kind of sums up my life so that’s why I chose that pic, in case you were wondering.

  1. Well Said. Time waits on no one, and it’s up to you to decide how to use it.
