If you’ve lived in NYC all your life like me, you’ve likely passed this iconic bar on St. Marks Place. “Holiday Cocktail Lounge” is printed in a classic, unfussy font on a dark red awning, and you think to yourself, “surely they can’t mean ‘holiday’ like, Christmas?” But alas, they do! All year round they keep Christmas lights up around the top of the bar, and during the ACTUAL Christmas season, they decorate even more throughout. And really, when is it a bad time for a little holiday cheer?
That said, Holiday Cocktail Lounge is much more than a place to catch some festive feels; it’s a true gem in New York City’s vibrant nightlife scene. With a history as rich as its cocktails and a menu catering to every mood, this iconic establishment has been serving up good times and great drinks for over a century. Yes, a century. Whether you’re a cocktail enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone seeking a cozy spot for morning coffee, Holiday Cocktail Lounge has got you covered.
A Quick Peek into the History of Holiday Cocktail Lounge:
Opened in 1919, Holiday Cocktail Lounge has witnessed the ebb and flow of New York City’s dynamic history. Here are some fun facts that highlight its storied past:
- Prohibition-Era Roots: Originally a beauty shop, it secretly operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition, complete with hidden tunnels connecting to nearby bars and a theater.
- Historic Liquor License: After Prohibition ended in 1933, Holiday was granted the 50th liquor license in New York State, solidifying its place as a legitimate bar.
- Famous Patrons: Over the years, it became a favorite haunt for cultural icons like Frank Sinatra, Allen Ginsberg, and W.H. Auden.
- Revitalization: Closed briefly in 2012, the lounge was lovingly restored and reopened in 2015, retaining its original horseshoe bar and 1920s mural in the front of the bar (repainted from the original).
What’s on the Menu at Holiday Cocktail Lounge?
It’s not just about the drinks (though they’re excellent, too)! Here’s a taste of what you can expect from their menu:
- Morning Coffee and Pastries: Stop by in the morning for a fresh brew from Superlost Coffee and a selection of pastries like croissants (they even have vegan croissants!), mini beignets, and breakfast sandwiches. I had a BEC on a regular croissant and it was delightful; not too big either, which made it feel a little less guilty (or that’s just what I like to tell myself). It’s the perfect way to start your day with a touch of East Village charm!
- Signature Cocktails: The mixologists at Holiday serve up expertly crafted drinks with fun names like the “Uber Nap” with Ten to One 5 Origin Rum, lime, coconut, ginger, and Gardinia, or the tropical “Participation Trophy,” with clarified Ube milk punch, pandan, and coconut. Check out more drinks here.
- Bar Fare Favorites: Pair your drinks with snacks such as cheese and charcuterie boards, brisket burger sliders, or loaded fries—perfect for sharing. They even have “Fancy Deviled Eggs” which I have to call out because I love a deviled egg and frankly you don’t see them enough on bar menus! These are served with smoked trout & trout roe.
- Late-Night Snacks: Holiday caters to night owls with a menu that satisfies the drunchies (drunk munchies), making it a go-to spot for late-night dining. Crispy Wings w Ranch (a personal fave), Chips & Dip (onion dip, duh), Wagyu Corn Dog Bites, or a good ol’ grilled cheese. Can’t beat that. More of the food menu here.
Why You Should Visit:
Holiday Cocktail Lounge is more than a bar, it’s an experience steeped in history and character, though you might have to hang around for a couple drinks to get that kinda info (I was lucky enough to get a quick chat with Barbara, the Creative Director). Whether you’re marveling at its Prohibition-era stories, sipping on a masterfully crafted cocktail, or enjoying the Mad Men-esque atmosphere, every visit feels like stepping into a bit of New York City’s past. So the next time you’re in the East Village, make a point to stop by Holiday Cocktail Lounge!
