Solo Staycation at The Algonquin Hotel

Ah, the solo staycation—a chance to escape the daily grind without the hassle of TSA lines or deciphering foreign subway maps. And where better to indulge in some “me time” than at New York City’s own Algonquin Hotel? This 120-plus-year-old establishment has had a facelift fit for a Real Housewife, emerging from its latest post-COVID renovation looking fresher than ever.

A Room Fit for Royalty (or at Least, You)

Upon entering my room (which was actually a suite), I half-expected to find a quill and parchment awaiting my next great novel. Instead, I was greeted by modern amenities with just the right amount of old school finishes like ornate rotary phones (they weren’t actually rotary but they LOOKED the part). And the bed? Comfortable doesn’t begin to describe it; it was like sleeping on a cloud that had been to finishing school. My only issue was the shower drain – that thing needed to be snaked badly but thankfully I wasn’t taking a long shower or washing my hair.

Hex and the City Tarot Reading: Because Why Not?

Feeling a bit adventurous, I opted for the “Hex and the City” package. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill hotel add-on. It includes a one-on-one tarot reading with the hotel’s resident wellness witch, Cardsy B – author, intuitive tarot reader, and wellness influencer. Her work has been featured in Nylon, Elle, Bustle, MTV and The Zoe Report. She is also the host of the award-winning Hex and the City podcast and author of the acclaimed memoir The Saturn Diaries: A Modern Day Grimoire (which you will get a copy of!)

I wasn’t sure what to expect—but I truly enjoy the spiritual side of the universe and find it very interesting (not to mention, shockingly accurate sometimes). Cardsy B was delightful and friendly, guiding me through the tarot with insights that were both enlightening and again, eerily accurate. The package also gifted me a copy of her book, a deck of tarot cards, and a candle that smells so good I’ve been burning it daily in my apartment.

Hamlet: The Feline Overlord

No stay at the Algonquin is complete without Hamlet, the hotel’s resident cat. You know I’m a cat lover so this REALLY excited me. This tradition dates back to the 1920s when actor John Barrymore decided the hotel needed a mascot and named the first feline Hamlet. The current Hamlet continues the legacy, lounging around the lobby with an air of indifference only a cat (especially a New Yorker cat) can muster.

Dining Without Leaving the Premises

Why venture into the chaotic streets of Manhattan when the Algonquin offers dining options that cater to your every whim? My only complaint is that they don’t have room service (I am lazy) but I suppose it’s a good excuse to force yourself to do things (#daradoingthings)

  • The Round Table Restaurant: Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this establishment lets you dine in the very spot where the famous Algonquin Round Table met. You can almost hear the witty banter as you sip your coffee. View Menu
  • Blue Bar: Whether you’re in the mood for a classic cocktail or something with a modern twist, the Blue Bar has you covered. The ambiance is as smooth as the drinks. View Menu

And yes, they have breakfast served daily from 7 am – 12 pm, but again, there is no room service, so you have to leave the room to actually get it. But it’s worth it. I’m also a breakfast person so maybe I am biased.

Venturing Beyond the Algonquin

This is NYC, home of some of the best food in the world! And the hotel’s prime location offers a bunch of dining and entertainment options:

  • Joe’s Pizza: Craving a slice? This nearby joint is famed for serving up some of the best New York-style pizza. Located at 1435 Broadway (and multiple other locations).
  • Morton’s The Steakhouse: For those days when only a juicy steak will do, Morton’s is just around the corner. View Menu and Reserve
  • Carrot Express: I know this isn’t an NYC staple or anything, I just love their stuff for a quick grab & go meal. “The Legal Wrap” is my fave. View their menu.
  • Bryant Park: Need a breath of fresh air? This urban oasis is perfect for a leisurely stroll or some prime people-watching. There’s also a bunch of restaurants in the area that are solid. Explore Bryant Park
  • Rockefeller Center: Whether you’re in the mood for shopping, dining, or just soaking in the iconic sights, Rockefeller Center has it all. Highly recommend Ace’s Pizza.

Final Thoughts

A solo staycation at the Algonquin Hotel is like stepping into a time machine that propels you into the future while keeping one foot firmly planted in the charm of the past. With its blend of history, luxury, and a dash of mystical, it’s the perfect retreat for those looking to escape without really leaving. Plus, where else can you get your fortune told, pet a famous cat, and sleep like royalty—all under one roof?
