If you lived in New York in the early 2000s, you probably know Buddakan as the place to pregame for the Meatpacking club circuit – or maybe you just remember it from Sex and the City (Carrie and Big’s rehearsal dinner in the movie). Either way, I hadn’t stepped foot inside here since flip phones were a thing, and let me tell you… walking into that dimly lit, ultra-glam dining room in broad daylight for a dumpling-making class was a full-blown “I’m aware of my age” experience.
But… in the best way possible. Thankfully I don’t really miss partying until the wee hours of the morning.
Turns out, Buddakan is more than just a late-night hotspot with insanely high ceilings and moody lighting; it’s now home to one of the most fun and delicious cooking classes in NYC. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to pleat dumplings without them falling apart in your steamer (or air fryer, if you’re me), this is your chance.

Here’s What You Get at Buddakan’s Dumpling Making Class:
- A hands-on lesson from Executive Chef Zachary Taylor and Chef de Cuisine Tommy Sao
- Learn traditional Asian techniques and ingredients using real-deal utensils
- Make and eat your own dim sum creations (no judgment on your folding skills, mine were passable at best)
- Enjoy house specialties, small bites, and a variety of beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic – in case you’re like me and get tipsy off of one glass of wine – I didn’t drink at this event)
- Hosted at Buddakan’s iconic downstairs banquet table – again, Carrie and Big’s rehearsal dinner!
- Kitchen tour of a truly massive (and iconic) NYC kitchen
- 21+ only (this is grown-up dumpling hour, so leave the kiddos home for this one)
Upcoming Class Dates:
- April 12th
- May 10th
- June 14th
If you’re someone who loves good food, dumplings with a side of striking décor, and the idea of casually saying “Oh yeah I made dumplings at Buddakan last weekend,” then go ahead and book a spot. Classes are held once a month and reservations open 30 days in advance, so set a reminder (or tell your Type A friend to do it for you). Cost is $150 and everyone I met at the event said they felt it was 100% worth it based on the amount of food & drinks you get in addition to the class!
? Book your spot here on OpenTable.
Whether you’re a dumpling fanatic or just looking for a date idea that doesn’t involve another sad martini at a crowded bar, this one’s a winner. Who knew Buddakan by daylight would feel like a plot twist in my culinary journey? Turns out, some things get better with age. 😉
